What is the BMR Calculator?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep you alive — pumping your heart, breathing, maintaining body temperature. It's the floor of your daily calorie need.
We use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, the most accurate widely-used BMR formula for healthy adults (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2005).
Formula
Men: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5 · Women: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161
- W — Weight in kg
- H — Height in cm
- A — Age in years
Step-by-step example
Setup: Male, 28 yrs, 70 kg, 172 cm.
- 10×70 + 6.25×172 − 5×28 + 5
- = 700 + 1075 − 140 + 5 = 1640 kcal
Answer: BMR ≈ 1,640 kcal/day
Frequently asked questions
Is BMR the same as TDEE?
No. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) = BMR × activity factor. TDEE is what you actually burn in a day.
Can I eat below BMR to lose weight faster?
Not safely. Eating below BMR triggers metabolic adaptation, muscle loss and rebound. Use a moderate deficit from TDEE instead.
